Received an email a few days ago from a Gary Lee Pownall asking if I had anything on the 1970 Track & Field season.
The oldest season I had was from 1975 but I told him I could see what I could do.
Found that Pownall was a sophomore at Montgomery that year and was pretty darn good.
Back then it was not Varsity and JV but class A B & C.
A being what we would call Varsity.
Pownall competed in the B class.
Pownall had some great marks like 22.9 for the 220 yard dash (=23.01 metric FAT), 10.2 100y (11.37m), 21-1 3/4 for the long jump and ran on the B 440 Relay that clocked 44.4 (44.39m).
The NCS MOC meet had a division for the B’s and the Vikings 44.5 time won the meet.
The week before at the NCS III, like our NCS Redwood Area meet, Pownall was 0.1 off the meet record of 22.8 with his 22.9 time.
At the NBL finals Pownall also won the long jump with his 21-1 3/4 jump.
Pownall’s family then moved to LA area and in his senior year he qualified for state in the 180 yard Low Hurdles.
