CMC Championships, 11/12/08
College of Mendocino, 3.1 Miles
The 2008 edition of the Coastal Mountain Championships had something for everyone… perfect weather, slightly overcast with a cooling breeze, a challenging course, the 3.1 mile layout with numerous hills over dirt trails and grass and one of the most hotly contested fields in recent memory. The Varsity Girls’ race was led from start to finish by Sonoma Academy’s Grace Hafner, undefeated in CMC dual meets this season. The team race was won by a close knit group of five girls from Santa Rosa Christian whose point total edged Sonoma Academy 63 to 72, the team time was even close as SRC prevailed by a scant 15 seconds. (2:03:28 to 2:03:43). Rincon Valley Christian edged Middletown 83 to 95 as the Southern half of the Conference took the first three places.
In the complex scoring for the North and South CMC pennants, Sonoma held off Santa Rosa Christian 39 to 44 to win the CMC South, while Cloverdale edged Middletown 37 to 51 for the North title. Santa Rosa Christian, Sonoma Academy, and Rincon Valley Christian are hopeful of landing a spot at the Division 5 State Meet finals as they compete for the 4th and last qualifying position at next week’s Sectional Finals at Hayward. The first three places are considered a lock for University, College Prep, and Marin Academy, with Uni and CP ranked in the top ten in the state among D-5 schools and Marin close behind. As many as 7 schools including the 3 teams from the CMC will vie for the coveted 4th position and a trip to Woodward Park for the state finals.
The Varsity Boys’ race was led from start to finish by Skylar Thomas of Mendocino, but the team race was captured by Willits, a Division IV school, edging the previously undefeated team from Santa Rosa Christian, in a mild upset 71-74. The Boys’ team race was a real donnybrook with five teams finishing within 15 points of each other and all 5 team times within 2 minutes of each other. Willits prevailed in the all important point totals, winning the conference meet and the league pennant for the CMC North, while Santa Rosa Christian won the Southern pennant in a nail-biter over Rincon Valley Christian. As the schools move on to the Sections, SRC, Upper Lake, RVC, and Cloverdale will battle for the 5th and final State meet berth at Hayward with St. Joseph’s, Lick Wilmerding, and Marin Academy.
SRC dominated the JV competition with a perfect score of 15 for the first 5 team positions, as Willits edged Clear Lake for 2nd 55-56. Garik Badalans of SRC led from the beginning.
