2016 should be an exciting year for track

There is no telling what this season will produce but here a few things I’m hoping will.
I’m planning to be at the Big Cat meet March 5th at Santa Rosa High to see the beginnings of this season.

How about new Empire records in the 100, 200 and 400.
As a freshman last year Santa Rosa’s Kirsten Carter destroyed the records in the 200 and 400. Will she add the 100 this year? And how about the first girl to ever run under 12.00 FAT?

Empire’s Best All-Around Sprinters
100 ………. 200 ………. 400 ………. Total
12.19(614) 24.04(689) 54.24(630) 1933 Kirsten Carter, Santa Rosa 2015 23.8
12.14(624) 25.04(603) 56.73(531) 1758 Jenna Lowder, Maria Carrillo 2006 11.9, 24.8
12.34(586) 25.09(598) 58.64(461) 1645 Sharon Polley, El Molino 1986-88 12.1, 58.4
12.18(616) 24.88(616) 60.54(395) 1627 Tamika Brown, Fort Bragg 1991-93 60.3
12.72(516) 25.55(560) 56.53(539) 1615 Jackie Chalmers, Montgomery 2013

In the last two years only one boy has broken 160 feet in the discus. Caleb Lundquist, Casa Grande 161-1 2014. Could we have three do it this year? How about the first 170 footer since 2003?
With these three back it could happen.
Delano Bell, 12, Santa Rosa; 2015 156-2, 10, 9
Reed Salmon, 12, Santa Rosa; 2015 156-1
Will Smith, 12, Willits; 2015 154-8

This could be the last year for awhile that will have only one Bowen make the state meet.
Rylee already has two state championships in cross country but this will be the last season she will have before her younger sister Kate makes it two Bowen’s taking spots away from the rest of California.

How about a single race with three local boys under 50 in 400.
With these three back it could happen.
Edwin Reyes, 12, Sonoma Valley; 2015 50.30
Isaiah Smith, 11, Maria Carrillo; 50.84 1/23/16 Cal All Comers
Ross Simmons, 11, Analy; 2015 50.91

Only three girls have ever run under 15 seconds for the high hurdles.
14.57 Katie Schukle, Santa Rosa #1 1996
14.69 Suzanne Howard, Santa Rosa #2 2008
14.74 Claire Bingham, Healdsburg #1 2010
Watch as St. Helena’s Julia DeVincenzi 15.27 and Windsor’s Maddie Call 15.39 try and add there names to that list.

Only 37 boys have ever broken 4:20 for the 1600m. Which of these will do it first?
Brian Schultz, 11, El Molino; 2015 4:22.08
Matt Salazar, 12, Casa Grande; 2015 4:23.62
Jordan Scobey, 12, Maria Carrillo; 2015 4:24.74+
Luca Mazzanti, 11, Santa Rosa; 2015 4:25.24
Daniel Pride, 11, Santa Rosa; 2015 4:26.28

Or how about new records in the Pole Vault or Long Jump.
Sonoma Valley’s Isabel Garon did 11-5 last year and is closing in on the 12-3 record. While Carter soared to 18-11 last year in the LJ. Would be neat to see the first 20 foot jump ever.
Current records
19-8 Amey Mitchell, Rancho Cotate 1990
12-3 Michelle Stone, Ursuline 2010

How about the first boy to run multiple wind adjusted 100’s under 11.

Maria Carrillo’s Ian Herculson ran 11.00 +0.2 last year at NBL finals which adjusts to 11.01.
