Indoor Memories

It was very exciting to see the great performances that happened recently for local athletes at indoor Track and Field meets.

Made me wish all the more that California had some indoor meets for our kids.
I was lucky enough to get to compete at the Footlocker Indoor Invitational at the San Francisco Cow Palace in the early 80’s.
Loved running down the wooden runways doing the pole vault.

Me competing indoors for Sonoma State at the Cow Palace.

When I was on the coaching staff at Montgomery, I wanted our team to get to experience that a little so I made up an inter-squad meet inside the Montgomery gym.
We had nearly all the events, just modified.
The straight sprint was only 25 meters long. I think the hurdle events were only over two hurdles.
The other running events were run in an oval using cones for the curbs.
High jump was normal but the long & triple jump were standing events.
If you have never seen indoor shot puts they have a rubber coating around them to protect the floor.
We substituted the rope climb for the pole vault.

Really needed a larger gym than the one at Montgomery and have thought how great it would be to rent the Santa Rosa JC or Sonoma State gym to put on an indoor invitational.

Anyway, lots of good memories.
