The SRJC Bear Cubs traveled north to Arcata for the Beat the Heat Invitational hosted by College of the Redwoods. The teams camped out in the redwoods before the race, enduring heavy rain that turned the trip into a real test of endurance and team spirit. But the tough conditions only seemed to fuel their drive on race day.
At the picturesque Arcata Marsh the teams batted hard to put on a good show in their opening race. The women’s team did not field a complete 5, however they showed great resilience and chalked up great experience for the next race.
The Men, led by Freshman Jared Hayes, dominated the field scoring 25 point on their way to a team win. Hayes finished in first place with a time of 26:51 over the 8 Kilometer race. Although the team race nearly an entire mile further than the tradtional 4 mile JC race, each athlete had an eroute 4 mile time faster than their early season time trial.
The Bear Cubs will take a 4 week training block before returning to action at the Big 8 Preview hosted by Diablo Valley College in Walnut Creek.
