Three Meets in Three Days – SRJC Track and Field

The Bear Cubs did a tour of the Bay Area this weekend with three meets in as many days as they competed at the Chabot Invitational, The Mike Fanelli Track Classic, and the Stanford Invitational.

The weekend started off with Paden Collard and Luke Baird traveling to San Francisco state to compete in the distance events at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Paden Collard put in a valiant effort against some tough competition in the 10,000m. Although he did not improve his time, he fought hard to the finish. Luke Baird toed the line with runners from across the country in the 3000m Steeplechase. Baird was able to finish the day with a personal best and a NorCal Provisional Mark of 10:10.57.

Across the Bay in Hayward, the Bear Cubs were getting after it at the Chabot Invitational. The Men’s and Women’s Relay team snagged season bests and NorCal Auto Qualifiers. The Women’s team of Lianah Ouye, Madi Monore, Emily Johnson and Tianna Jardstrom finished in 1st place with a time of 49.89. This mark ranks them 3rd in the North, 12th in the State, and 8th All-Time at SRJC. The men’s team consisting of Jay T Luis, Kyle Gilbert, Jalydon Love, and Jacob Cibrian-Gomez had a seasons best of 42.68. This mark ranks them 6th in the North, and 17th in the State. Jacob Cibrian-Gomez continued to have a fantastic day by breaking the 11 second barrier in the 100m to finish 7th with a time of 10.95

Other highlights of Day 1 included Orion Dowdall winning the Pole Vault with a mark of 4.35m (14’3.25”) and Dui Froes winning the Triple Jump with a mark of 13.67m(44’10.25”).

On Day 2, a handful of Bear Cubs returned to action at the Mike Fanelli Classic at SF State, while our 400h duo of Vince Corday and Tianna Jarstrom traveled to Stanford University for the Stanford Invitational. At San Francisco, Andrew Engel started the day by taking 3rd in his heat in the 1500m with a time of 4:00.57. This time was just .07 seconds off the State A qualifier and now ranks Engel 8th in Northern California. Evelin Ramirez was next up, also running the 1500m. Ramirez battled hard to a personal best of 5:14.51. Nathan Hayes finished out the day at San Francisco with a personal best in the 5000m. Hayes took the lead early and was able to push the pace, ultimately finishing with a time of 15:39.58.

Further down the 280 Freeway, Vince Corday and Tianna Jardstrom were getting ready for their 400mH races at the Stanford Invitational. Jardstrom was up first and did not disappoint. Chasing down a ravel in the last 100m, Jardstrom finished 3rd in her heat and 11th overall (fastest JC Finisher) with a time of 65.13. Vince Corday started his race off hot. Leading the way through 200m, Vince closed well and was able to hold off some challengers as he also finished 3rd in his heat (fastest JC Finisher) with a time of 54.82. Both Tianna and Vince did not PR, but they came away more confident and hungry for more.

On Day 3, The rest of the Bear Cubs returned to SF State to the final day of competition at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. In the women’s 400, Tianna Jardstrom came away with a heat winner and a personal record of 59.54. Madi Monroe was close behind. After nearly a month of not racing due to injury, Monroe was able to PR and just miss going under the 1-minute barrier with a time of 60.09. Emily Johnson improved her high jump personal best with a leap of 1.53m (5’0.25”). This mark was good for 4th place overall. Orion Dowdall, fresh off his 1st place finish at Chabot two days prior, went on to win again in the pole vault. This time with a mark of 4.48m (14’8.25”). Not to be outdone, Dui Froes also was an event winner at Chabot and San Francisco. Obliterating his previous person best in the triple jump with a mark of 14.24m (46’8.75”, this mark ranks Dui first in the North and 6th in the State.

The Bear Cubs take a week off of competing next week. They will return to action on April 12/13th with the Northern California Combined Events Championships at De Anza College and the Johnny Mathis Invitational at SF State and the Bulldog Invite at CSM on April 15/16th.
