Oak Boys
Maria Carrillo boys have won 17 of the last 20 finals and have not lost a finals since 2011.
Last year they won the finals but shared the pennant with Santa Rosa because the Panthers won the dual meet.
This year on 10/16 the score was Maria Carrillo 23, Santa Rosa 36.
So it appears the Puma’s look ready to make it twelve consecutive finals wins.
No clear cut favorite in the boys.
On 10/23 Analy junior Owen Dawson ran 15:39.5 at Spring Lake to best teammate senior Cormac Gaylord (15:44.4) with Maria Carrillo junior Austin Petrik in third.
On 10/16 Santa Rosa senior Ome Zuniga blazed a 15:31 at Spring Lake to best Petrik in 15:40.1.
The 9/25 dual at Analy had the finishing order at Gaylord then Zuniga then Dawson.
In last years Oak finals Zuniga was unable to compete and in the Redwood finals Gaylord won with Dawson only 8th.
In other words this will be an exciting final up front to see who comes up with the big performance and wins it.
Santa Rosa’s last individual champion was Lucas Mazzanti 2016.
Analy is competing for the first time in this division since 1964.
Gaylord could be the first runner to ever win in both divisions if he wins the Oak race. Teammate Dawson could be the first Analy runner to win the Oak race if he was to win.
Oak Girls
This year looks like a carbon copy of last year.
Last year Montgomery’s incredible trio of Seelah Kittelstrom, Amrie Lacefield and Hanne Thomsen went 1-2-3 in every NBL meet they ran and have done the same this year.
In dual meets that assures your team of a win even if your 4-5 runners come in last.
In the 10/23 dual between the top two schools the Vikings won again at Montgomery 29, Maria Carrillo 30.
But as it was last year expect the Puma’s to take the finals because of their depth.
The Puma’s have won 18 of the last 20 finals.
Santa Rosa’s Delaney White, 2012-2015, is the only NBL runner to ever win four times.
Thomsen will almost for sure be the second.
What will be of most interest to me is how hard Thomsen will go.
Thomsen is number two on the All-Time Spring Lake list behind Julia Stamps who won the finals her junior-senior years and holds the class records at Spring Lake for those same years.
Thomsen was 6 seconds off the course record her sophomore year. and the question is will she go for it here.

Redwood Boys
Piner moved into the Oak division in 2018 but are now back in the Redwood division were they have collected 19 pennants and it looks like they will pick up number 20 this year after showing their team strength on 10/16 scoring Piner 23, Healdsburg 37.
Healdsburg junior Jake McWilliams was only 6th in the Redwood finals last year but seems to be the dominate runner this year. The last time his school had the top runner in their division was Jason Mendes 1996.
Redwood Girls
As with the boys the Piner girls look to make a triumphant return to the Redwood league after their closest competition fell to them on 10/23 Piner 19, Rancho Cotate 39. Piner’s last pennant was in 2013.
Cardinal Newman’s Gwen Brockett is the returning Redwood champ but will need to contend with Piner’s Kamila Olivera who took their dual battle.
